Free program for people in our communities who work with homeless individuals
- to provide insights into the conditions of the very poor and people experiencing homelessness
- to help us learn to compassionately, confidently, and effectively address problematic behavior from people experiencing homelessness, mental illness, addiction, or trauma
- to give us practical tips and tools to effectively manage challenging situations
Ryan Dowd started volunteering at Hesed House (the second largest shelter in Illinois) with his church (Oswego Presbyterian) when he was 13. He joined the staff when he was 21 and became Executive Director after law school. In addition to running Hesed House, Ryan trains organizations around the world how to compassionately manage problematic behavior from homeless individuals.
Ryan authored The Librarian’s Guide to Homelessness, which was published by the American Library Association. Ryan co-authored with actor/director/writer Emilio Estevez a discussion guide to by used with Emilio’s move about homelessness, The Public.
