Business Book Club
As an educational component offered by the Yorkville Chamber, the new Business Book Club kicked off on June 20th. Attendees set a meeting format and selected the first two titles. The new book for discussion on Friday, September 5th is:
Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap . . . and Others Don't by Jim Collins
The Business Book Club meets on the 1st and 3rd Fridays of each month at from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at Vignettes (corner of Van Emmon & Bridge Streets in downtown Yorkville). It’s a cozy setting for a rich discussion.
There is no program fee. The only expense is the cost of books. Books may be available at area libraries. The discounted prices of the books at Amazon.com are quite attractive.
Cheryl Lee of C/L Design-Build is the initial group facilitator. Chamber member hosts, Vignettes and Village Grind Too, are kind enough to provide free coffee and pastries for the readers.
The purpose of the Business Book Club is to offer casual discussion of business-related books, having global interest to Chamber members. The lively conversation will lead to the sharing of different perspectives and to the direct application of concepts, tips, and methods to members’ businesses.
Participants will gain insights and new ideas to put into play to immediately. This is not meant to be a literary book club, but rather an opportunity to generate a give-and-take, to apply the books’ material to our everyday businesses, to serve as a sounding board, and to help each other improve operations, increase sales, initiate expansion, or maybe even retire early.
A few guidelines were established:
- Each participant of this book club must be a member of the Yorkville Chamber.
- For each meeting, members will read 1/3 to 1/2 of a book, depending on the length or complexity of the book. Typically, one book will be read and discussed over a 6-week period.
- On occasion, an expert on a relevant subject will speak to the group pertaining to the subject matter.
- A Yahoo Group will be set up to allow communication among members in the Book Club.
- Attendees will select upcoming business titles for discussion. Suggested titles, along with their book reviews, can be e-mailed to the group for consideration. Reviews can be found on the Internet.
- It is recommended that all books are business in nature and that they apply to various businesses and industries.
- Chamber members may join the Book Club at any time.
- The facilitator may rotate with each book.
Gain an edge on your competition! Learn and grow by joining the Yorkville Chamber Business Book Club.
